    Some Marquetry

I'm doing a project right now which will require a number of marquetry panels. Here's one that I thought came out nicely. The field is figured white oak in a half radial pattern (I discovered that oak veneer can be quite difficult to work with). The marquetry woods are holly, cherry, mahogany, bloodwood and dyed woods. The banding is dyed (adobe) veneer and holly and the border is figured white oak. I want to do each panel in a different primary wood and in a different design - which is challenging me. I'll just have to see what I can come up with.

I chose the project to give me some additional experience in doing marquetry. It'll be a while before the whole project is completed.

Yeah, that's the official flower of marquetry. That's a marquetry joke. Seems that everyone who does marquetry does dogwood because it's fairly easy (compared to other flowers). I plan to do some other flowers on some of the other panels. One will be white roses and the other may be morning glories - if I can do them okay.

The leaves in this panel are not realistic dogwood but I felt the jagged edges looked better than smooth edges. I go for what looks good rather than a realistic rendering of the flowers.

There's a lot to marquetry (a lot of steps) so a tutorial would be long. The best resource to get started is Paul Schurch's DVD on Marquetry (Vol 2 of the veneering series). It'll lead you through the process. But you'll need some tools, especially a scroll saw, and some supplies.
