How long should an Alkyd stain dry before covering with dewaxed shellac? Thanks!

What does the can of stain say is the dry time?

Higher heat and lower humidity will help the dry time.

Once you do apply the shellac, don't overwork it--get it on and leave it alone. Otherwise, the alcohol in the shellac will start to dissolve the pigments in the stain and your applicator will start to pull the stain off.

I've found 1-3 days is adequate, depending on what you're staining (1 day for bare wood, 3 days for a non-porous, fiberglass door).

Can is sherwin williams "professional" alkyd stain. Says "allow one hour dry time". Stain is over shellac over dye. Next is shellac over stain, then WB top coat.

Joe just make sure to check your adhesion between the two shellac layers with the alkyd stain in between ok? If the stain is to thick the lac may not be able to adhere to the shellac underneath and may [not saying it will] not have adhesion to anything but the stain film ok?do a tst piece first just to make sure, let the coat over the stain dry for a few hours and take a piece of duct tape and press it down hard on the shellac and pull off quickly and see if anything comes loose or attaches itself to the tape, if it does, you've got a problem, if not you should be good to go with the project itself.

Thanks Sheldon. Stain was wiped on really thin, just to adjust color slightly. I sprayed the underside of the piece with shellac and it seems fine.
