    Can you identify this?

A friend of mine at work recently caught this porthole off of Gwynn's Island, Matthews County, Virginia. He was between Cherry Point and Hole-in-the-Wall. Composition is brass/bronze and glass. Size: 4 1/2: diameter; approximate height 1 1/4". Weight is 0.58 lb. Any information you can supply on this item would be most gratefully appreciated. Many thanks!

Last time I saw one of those, I was washing out the meat locker. Drain cover is what that is

    Drain cover with glass??

I'd guess it's from an old deep sea diver's helmet, the kind that had a hose and air was pumped in from above by a compressor to the guy wearing it down below. Maybe a vision port on the helmet. Google them and you will see images of helmets that have ports of this exact design and approximate size.
