Major Issues with CorelDRAW X6 WIndows 7 64BIT

I have had nothing but headaches with CorelDRAW X6.

Situation: This is the first CorelDRAW product I have purchased (I'm new to laser engraving). I have a fairly new computer, a Dell XPS with Intel I7-2600 CPU 3.4GHz, 12GHz RAM, 64BIT... I installed CorelDRAW X6. It worked fine for the first 3 days, worked great, I was going through tutorials and learning a lot. Then I upgraded my Anti-Virus (Dr. Web) and CorelDRAW has been unusable since.

What I did: I removed Corel, removed the Anitvirus program, restored my computer to a date prior to the antivirus install. With the antivirus uninstalled, I "reinstalled Corel, didn't work, closed it with the task manager, uninstalled it, restart, restored, installed, didn't work, closed it with the task manager"... did this cycle about 5 times over a few days...

Symptoms: After starting Corel it appears to hang up on trying to start the "Welcome screen". The Corel workspace opens however it is "busy" and will not allow me to do anything. One time out of all my attempts I was able to start using Corel, the welcome screen never came up, I could start a new drawing, I drew a couple of shapes, then I went and tried to start the Welcome screen and it froze up again..... never recovered

Observations: The Task Manager never stated that the program was unresponsive, always showed it running. My hard drive activity light was flashing/continuous like the program was cranking along. Some of the other cases I found online said that it could take from 5 to 30 minutes to open files.. I let it run for up to 5-7min before I would end the program in the Task Mngr...

I've had email correspondance with Corel, but they really don't have a solution... walked me through deleting files, using "F8" on start, etc.... no luck

I have searched the web and found some others with this issue on older forums but they have given up and went back to X3 or X5....

Anyone experience issues with X6??? Is it really unusable on some computers? God... I feel like I wasted good money trying to get a product that "90% of Laser Engravers Use"...

I have CorelDRAW X6 uninstalled now, my system is restored and everything runs good, great as a matter of fact, and I'm not sure what to do... Inkscape runs good... no issues..

My Helix shows up next week and my software isn't usable!!!!!!! I'll have to put off the "on-site" training I have scheduled until I can figure this out... I am out of ideas and am starting to get a "bad taste in my mouth" for Corel

    Dave,

Did you load the 64-bit version of CorelDRAW, or the 32-bit version? If you're running the 64-bit version, have you tried using the 32-bit version? I don't currently have CorelDRAW installed so I'll download both the 32-bit and 64 bit trials and give it a go. (I'm running Windows 64-bit with 16 gigs of memory)

AV programs can wreak so much havoc on a system. Since it worked prior to the AV upgrade, I'd first suspect something associated with the AV program. Since you did a restore (Using system restore? Or did you restore from a system image backup?) that "should" have taken care of the AV issue. I've never heard of Dr. Web... by name alone it doesn't sound very "mainstream". I personally use Microsoft Security Essentials as my goto "free" AV program.

My next suspect would actually be associated with your hard drive and bad sectors. Since you loaded new data (CorelDRAW) then loaded more data (AV upgrade), it may have reached a section of the hard drive that has weak or bad sectors. Uninstalling and reinstalling won't necessarily avoid those bad sectors and will cause a lot of hard drive activity as it tries to read and correct the damage (assuming that CorelDRAW installed to the area that has bad blocks).

Do you know the manufacturer of your hard drive? Typically you can download drive diagnostics to scan the hard drive without affecting the data. (Western Digital = Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, Seagate = SeaTools for Windows)

David, seeing it ran well until the Anti Virus program, I am fairly certain that Anti Virus was the problem,--the uninstall was wise, and going back to a retore point good, HOWEVER---there may have been traces left in the Registry and this may cause problems. Same with the Corel X6; would have been good to cleanout the registry of both programs, then to reload Corel X6,; beyond that, a full reload from scratch!!! Amos

    Dave,

there is a Corel uninstaller utility, go to Coreldraw forum and search for it or ask for it, as for protection I use Microsoft Security Essentials... I have been using it for more than 2 years with no problems, I was skeptical at first about it but now I can recommend it too, is a native to windows, good and free.

    Good luck.

    Thanks Ruben,

I uninstalled Dr. WEb and now have MS Security Essentials running. S
Should I stop MSSEssentials before I install Corel?

    Dave,

no, I don't think you'll need to disable MSSE, I never do and I have installed many different programs with no problems including Coreldraw X6, but I think you should get the Coreldraw uninstaller, this will help by removing all registry records that may be corrupt, by just uninstalling and re-installing I don't think you will be able to fix it if in fact there are corrupt registry records, or if you have the knowledge to edit the registry manually then do it, or you could use another utility capable of cleaning the registry by cleanly uninstalling the program like System Mechanic, but you need to be careful... you need to know what you're doing with any of the last 2 options I point out, with these if you do anything wrong you could cause even more mayor problems to your system, the most secure and better option is the Coreldraw uninstaller utility program.

In general, registry "cleaners" are very bad news. Many people have good luck but I get to repair a whole lot of computers for the people that have terrible results. Ccleaner is the rare "Cleaner" that causes very few problems (and it mostly removes unneeded files, but also has a registry cleaning module).

Finally got this fixed. After troubleshooting by DELL, they determined that the was some corrupted operating system files... weird because the computer runs fine for everything except Corel... After rebuilding the operating system Corel installed and now runs fine...

    whew! that took some patients!!!
