    lie nielsen 62 vs. 164

I have a lie nielsen 62 and was curious how they compare in use for end grain and flushing edges......overall how does the 164 perform and how do you like it, Im thinking of buying one.thanks

  2. I have both

I have both the 62 and 164 and like them both. The 164 takes a little bit of getting used to, due to the length, there isn't as much room for your hand. I don't think either one excels above the other for end grain though.

The 164 seems a bit less massive and more suited for smoothing and more delicate cuts, where the 62 is more like using a jack plane because of it's size.

    Timothy,

I agree with Steven, I also have both. The 164 is sort of like a large block plane, it is very nice for end grain work, but also as a smoother when grain will allow a low angle plane. Both are very nice and they are two of my favorites.

I have the 164 and while it is a nice tool, I either go for a 60 1/2 block plane for end grain or a 4 1/2 for smoothing.
