Updates on my bolt on 3d printer extruder CNC router mod

Everything is installed and wired. Lots of testing now to do but I am extruding 1.75 PLA filament.

Glad its my shop I am responsible for - I only have to make me happy.

You may want to add a heated bed in the area you intend to work... getting the plastic to stick to the bed during the initial layers is difficult without it. I couldn't figure out why my prints would lift until I realized the bed was only reaching about 40C before the print started.

I have one from QU-BD Dan - it is 200X200 with a built in thermister. My Controller box is wired for it now as I planned for it - just need to make up a cable for it. Are you printing ABS? I have read (no experience yet LOL) that PLA does not always require a heated bed and you can print to blue painters tape and lexan polycarbonate that has been sightly oiled. Have you read that?

Mike - this is really cool! I don't talk much here at SMC anymore but I'm following the CNC threads more and more since building my own machine. I've had thoughts of adding a 3D Printer head to mine, as well as possibly a laser head. THanks for posting this!

PLA has a lower heat, so it's easier to work with, but it's also softer than ABS in the end product. If you don't use the heated bed, cover your work area with a piece of glass and give it a light misting of hairspray (brand doesn't matter)... should help it to stick, and if it doesn't peel away under hand force, soak the plate in a bit of water.

Hi Ben. The machine above is done but I still have not mastered the setup config. I also started a stand alone 3d printer but that is taking a bit to get completed. Still at it but just busy at the day job and have not spent the time I have wanted to to button it up.

Standalone is an Ord Bot and I am running an arduino mega 2560 based RAMPS controller with LCD and pololu steppers. Its a whole different world than CNC for sure.
