Pine Flooring?

We use doug fir here in the NW. If you need additional strength/stiffness to the floor, there is 2 x 6 T&G KD doug fir available. It's used when the underneath of a subfloor will be visible from below. It's plenty strong--we even use it to line the walls of horse stalls!

I was just checking out some canary pine yesterday. Nice grain and seemed plenty hard.Found this image for ref.

Another question since I've never installed a wood floor. Does the floor have to be sanded once installed to smooth it out?

In a home environment, absolutely. In a shop environment, as long as it's level (which T&G should be) you really don't need to sand it--either no finish or a simple oil finish will do the job. IMHO, of course!
