Office Trash Can Design Help Request

Last week I made 12 name tag backing plaques to be mounted next to doors in some new management offices of a large Aero/Space contractor.

Within hours of the name plaques being mounted I received a call from one of the employees wanting me to quote a price for some custom made trash cans :

    Approximate size - Small 13 x 8¼ x 11½ - Need 3
    Approximate size - Large 16 x 10 x 14½ - Need 1

I spent a long time in an upper management position in a fortune 10 company and the only thing I ever had was your standard issue plastic trash can and never considered a custom made one. Oh well, management postions must be paying a lot more these days

I am initially thinking ½" walnut, cherry or poplar relatively conservative in appearance.

Any suggestions on a design would be appreciated.

    Ken,
I'm trying to come up with something unique for my own office. I hate the plastic bag that the janatorial staff insist on draping down over the sides...iknow, it makes their job much easier and less messy. I'm trying to come up with a design that allows a standard plastic one to sit inside the wooden one so that the plastic liner doesn't show.

    Hi Ken,

Check the fire codes. In Pittsburgh trash cans must be metal.

How about a segmented trash can, Ken? You wouldn't even have to turn it, but I think it would look pretty cool with some mixed woods and subsequent layers offset (so the miter joints of the segments don't line up from layer to layer).

Ken, I think Steve hit on a good idea...use decorative joinery. That way you can go with a simple design, yet have a solution that really sets off the fact that it's made of wood. That simple form could have straight...or if you are brave, tapered sides.

    Ken,

The LOML wants a nice one for the bathroom...I'm thinking an inverted pyramid. Nice angles to play with (and screw up in my case). You could always turn one, too!
    Wood: a fickle medium....
