A table was was finished with what I believe was some sort of minwax blue stain followed by a coat of poly. This was probably 10 years ago. The table was used as a desk and it shows minimal wear where a person's arms were sitting on the desk while using a keyboard.

My wife has decided that this table will now be our dinner table. I would like to refinish the top, but I am a bit unclear as to what I can do to that top short of sanding off the poly. My wife really likes the color, and I really don't want to match it.

I am under the impression that I cannot simply slap another coat of poly over the top, and I would probably prefer a different product for a tabletop anyway. The nice thing about a water based finish is that it would probably preserve the existing color pretty well.
