Who would actually attempt to construct this design 'as is'?

    Hey guys!

I just received another inquiry about some custom built-in shelves. Let me know what you think of this design. While creative and interesting looking I think it needs to be heavily modified to make better use of the sheet goods as well as construction and installation.

    Thoughts and opinions?

Here are the drawings. I tried to do a direct upload, but had some issues.

My (amateur) personal opinion is that the bottom cabinet on the right is too close to the French doors. Otherwise, I like it.

I'll find out in a bit if those doors swing out or in. My main concern was for the other wall. The randomness of the shelf length lends itself to a difficult cut list and most likely difficult installation.

The doors swing inward. I'll have to move the right cabinet to the left by 22-1/2".

Did you design this, or is it coming from a designer?
I think it looks pretty decent - if it's what the designer/customer wants, why make changes?

My potential client had someone, perhaps a friend draw this up on their computer. I think it looks great. I just think its very random and all 'ADD' about it. Lol!!! It just seems like a LOT of shelf length and no way to batch out a majority of the parts.

    Know what I mean Vern?

My opinion is that the design idea is there..... but a refined version is in order. There is no congruence between the base unit and the floating shelves/cubbies. Complimenting proportions, with just a bit of asymetry would take this from, "that's nice" to "WOW".

I hope you have a very solid construction method for floating shelves, your clients will inevitably overload them.

Do they actually intend to put books on these or "decorative accessories"? A couple of those shelves are rather long to hold books unless they are built very strongly or firmly attached to the wall at more than a couple points.
Being well-read is not the same as knowing what you are doing.

Doesn't look to hard to me. Sometimes you have to give the customer what they want.

I'm not saying it would be hard. It just seems illogical from a structural stand point as well as a construction stand point. Also a from a sheet goods stand point.

Just look at it like job security, If and when you build it like they want and decide after living with it for a few weeks they will have you build something else. Seems like a win win to me. Oh as it stands now the door either needs to be locked or the cabinet needs moved over. I like the fact it looks out of place, not perfect like we would usually build for ourselves.

I just heard today that he chose someone else for the job. He said his bid was close to mine, but he went with the other guy because he said he was using 1-1/2" veneered boards instead of 3/4". Sounds like particle board to me.
