Should the pivot point (a 1/2" dowel in this case and a 3' 9" radius) be directly opposite and squared off of the leading edge of the bandsaw blade, or should it be in front of or in back of the blade? My intuition says directly opposite.

I go back about 1/3 the distance from the front to the back of the gullet.

I have best result with pivot at front edge of the blade. When the blade is ahead of the pin, the blade wants to enlarge the cutting radius, especially on smaller radius cuts. I also find (and now have) the teeth on the pivot side wear much faster to point that circle cutting is next to impossible with jig, but cutting radius on opposite side still cuts with reasonable use. For the 3' 9" R, you will have a hard time seeing any difference if you are close to the leading edge.
