How not to check wall thickness

Today I decided to turn a small mesquite hf to use as a practice piece for some pyro and texturing. This was a small piece with an entry hole of about 5/8", so I was hollowing by hand. I was working on the bottom inside, trying to thin it out just a little more, when BLAM! I must have let the tool slip below center, big catch and the pieces went flying!
I can see that I left the shoulder area a little thick, the middle looked good and the bottom portion was on it's way, but I much prefer using calipers to check the walls!

Oh well, tomorrow's another day and I've got plenty of wood.

Nothing that a quart of glue (or another piece of mesquite) won't fix!

That'll buff right out. Or, put a little club soda on it.

Glad none of the pieces got ya.

I think this equates nicely to wood turning as well . . . . .

Were you free hand hollowing? I have had tool control problems when free handing it, especially if I get the tower in the middle, but I don't see that here. Some times if you have a big hook tool on, and are working from the bottom center to the walls, it can catch the back side with an uplift.

Nice try--glad you dodged the scrapnel. I think it has possibilities for a great spoon.
