Hutch rework finished and delivered - pic

Well, here is one thing I have been working on parttime over the last 2 months. A buddy at work bought this hutch and wanted it refinished, well at least touched up in several places, doors rehung and the inside remodeled for an entertainment center.

The hutch is all mahogany and is about 1-1/2" out of square while the sides of the cabinet "lean" somewhat. With the cabinet being what I call "twisted and out of square" made this project more than a challenge.

I built the inside cabinetry, both lower drawers have lights mounted in them so that they come on automatically when the drawer is opened. This was a customer request and I believe it worked out nicely. I had to make wooden blocks to actuate the micro-switches when each drawer was pulled open. Drawer slides are ballbearing, self-closing and very nice. Thanks goes to Mark Cothren for coming by and helping me with this project from time to time.

Both doors were also warped and some of the warp was pulled out when we installed 4 new hinges on each door instead of the previous two hinges. The color matching wound up being 2/3 Colonial Maple and 1/3 Red Mahogany mixed together. This mixture got the color close enough for the customer to be happy.

A hole had to be cut in the back and a new door panel made from what was cut out so he could open the door and access all his electronics from the back of the cabinet. The two muffin fans I installed are thermostacially controlled with a little thermostat on the end of one wire that could be placed further inside the cabinet for cooling his amp and other electronics.

The cabinet is 7-1/2 Feet tall, by 48" wide by 24" deep.

    Thanks for looking.

Nice job. It'd scare me silly to tear into something like that.

Really nice work Dennis. The matching of the colors went great. How old was this piece?

    Ernie,

From what we can gather....the piece is about 40 years old. Color matching was a real pain as no 2 places on the entire cabinet was the same exact color. So I "averaged" the color and started mixing stuff up until I got it as close as I could without getting too dark. Took 1 week of experimentation to get the color as close as I could.
