There was an interesting piece in this past Sunday's NY Times Magazine about John Townsend who I gather was one of the pre-eminent
American furniture makers in the 1700's. He was based in Newport, RI. The online version of the article can be seen here; access to the NY Times online is free, but you will need to register. The article does include some photos of his work, which is also on display now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
