Are these trunk corners strong enough?

So I'm building a frame (mahogany) and panel (QS White Oak) tack trunk. My original thought was to miter the corners, but I have decided against it. My current thoughts are to rabbet with a corner block. The 4 sides are complete, now I need to figure out how to assemble them.

Is the joint strong enough as is? Is the corner block necessary?

My answer would be that it depends on the stresses put on the joint. If there is any going the wrong way I would say it would end up splitting and I would opt for more meat on the rabbet.

Have you considered using a lock miter? Kind of a pain to set up, but I think it would work well for you. You wouldn't need a corner block with it.
