tale of 2 HF spindle sanders

I got one from HF as did a friend of mine he is not thrilled as its a 1 amp motor and takes little pressure to totally stop it, and plans to return it. Meanwhile mine came in and it has is a 2.6 amp motor 80% more weight and works just fine. Looking close at both boxes they are the same other than the specs, the model number is very same no addition to it. Nothing to hint that they have been upgraded, and to top it off the ser# are less than 100 apart. Both were made in China, but to be honest I think maybe at different factories. I truly believe that it is the luck of the draw if you get a 1 vs 2.6 amp.

I have to wonder why spindle sanders are so expensive, they are not that complex or precise

A 1 amp motor???? Seriously? Even a 2.6 sounds pretty weak.

Steve the woodcraft menards etc ones are 3.5 and they are much better.
