    Ambiguous question

I remember running across a thread awhile back that showed someone using multiple types of wood (small pieces) that made an amazing design. The problem is I don't remember what the technique was called and I don't know who posted it. But I seem to recall at the time he had many different designs (almost like a geometrical inlay). It has been driving me nuts the last few weeks trying to find it. I was hoping that somebody would be able to point me in the right direction. I know this isn't much to go on!

    Stephen Smith Sr,

I don't know the thread to which you are referring, but your description of intricate designs from multiple, shaped pieces of wood makes me think you mean "marquetry" >

To find the post you saw earlier, click on the "Advanced Search" button at the upper right of this page and search for "marquetry" and the time period of the post. For example a search for marquetry and within six months yields 25 results >

Yes, a wonderful technique requiring contrasting veneers and a fret saw. George Wilson is a real master of this technique and it would be fantastic if he has photos of a highly decorated lute he made in the 70's.

Stephen, maybe you're thinking of what I've heard called the "tumbling block" design. Here's a video of a guy making a cutting board with that design : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n0LdU8ZOJU

If the marquetry search doesn't come up with anything, also search for intarsia. Beautiful work done there.
