I just saw it Jim, that looks very cool but I have to ask, nice job on the letters but did you just do the letters or did you build the whole thing? And what the heck is it?

Speechless and waiting for some details. When I saw the pics I figured it was all machined from wood and coated to make it look like iron.

Did you notice the top gear has a crack in it? But without it I would have said it wasn't real. Impressive!

Thanks everyone!!!! We had a blast creating it.

    The gears and the mounts.

    1) carved from 2" thick 30lb HDU

    2) glued halves together and textured them

    3) painted with various sherwin williams and modern masters metallic paints. The rust is real rust. Iron paint with an oxidizing agent.

    The chain.

    1) all links cut from 1/2" PVC foam board.

    2) all connections in the chain are PVC pipe fittins

    3) the gear actually turns.

This thing stand over 5' tall and weighs only 100 lbs. No Wood or hard coating used at all.

+1 on AWESOME. The faux finish is outstanding. I thought it was really cast iron.
