Thread: Wood Gear Clocks

  1. #1

    Wood Gear Clocks

I cut the gears on my CNC router, With BobCad. The first attempts I used Red Oak and cut pie shapes and laminated them so the end grain of the wood was into the teeth of the gear but I didn't wait a year to cut the gears and found out why, SNAP! But I thought I'd try. I ended up using Baltic Burch Plywood which worked real good.

This one cracked, See the pie shapes, to bad it didn't work it came out real pretty.
    Thanks Jerry

It would be nice if all of these posts on the same project are put into a single thread... I think this is the third(?) thread so far...

I would be glad to do that if I knew what I was doing. I tried to do that when I started but could only put one Video per thread. And now there are 4 and I don't even know if you will see this???
This is all new to me!
    Thanks Jerry

While there could be a video limit per thread, my guess would be any limit would be "per post", not "per thread". You should be able to add to this post with any new videos, just put each one in a separate post.

Thread and Post, I didn't know there was two different things. If I replied to my own post, would that be a thread, is that what you mean? Keep in mind that marbles are smarter than me about this! I'll get it, it might take me a little longer than most. There should be a video on post or thread.
    Thanks

This entire conversation is a thread. Each instance where you hit "post reply" is a post. The same parlance is used over all forums (though not necessarily the same limits), so if you can get it right here, you'll be golden everywhere else.

At some point in the past there was a limit of 5 images per post, but that has either been bumped up or completely removed.

Clocks have always fascinated me. Whether it was in my blood (grandfather was a master clockmaker) or just the coolness of that many tiny parts all working in unison I can't say, but I love to look at complex mechanical stuff. One of these days I will make one myself... until then, I'll live vicariously through others.

This is out of step this should be before the one with the pendulum. I would try to fix it but I would be pushing my computer ability to the limit. I have it so messed up now I'm not sure it will make since, if I ever do it again I'll try to do it better.
    Thanks for your patience

Michael Simpson wrote a book on wooden clocks. He is a DIY builder/designer of the Kronos Robotics CNC router builds. Man of many talents.
Glad its my shop I am responsible for - I only have to make me happy.

I have built the base and I had to move into the shop. It is 7 feet tall and is starting to look something like a clock. The hour hand is really a two hour hand. I plan on using it to bring a ball to the top that will change the dial for indicating the hour. It has been a design as you go thing which has been close to becoming fire wood a couple of times. I am using a couple of 1 gallon water jugs to see how much weight I will need.

    Thanks again for looking.
