    Weekend wood haul

Was told I could come and collect some Elm burls and trunk wood. Went to the farm with a friend and found that the Elm turned out to be Oak but got two large burls and a bunch of other nice pieces.

On the way home got a phone call from another friend asking if I wanted any black walnut? Friend couldn't go so I borrowed a truck and took the wife and came home with a truckload! Shared about one third and this what I have left. The pieces standing iat the back are 20" across and 24" long.

Just waiting for someone else to bring me a load of Catalpa this week! Guess it's time I got turning on my "new to me" Powermatic 3250A

Sounds like you're set for a while....but....can we ever have enough free wood. Great find, and the new lathe looks awesome. Happy turning!

    Kevin,
Make sure you turn one of catalpa down the center exposing the growth rings. It is a very stable wood and doesn't seem to check/crack. At least the one I did didn't.

    Kevin,
Looks like you have picked my habit of collecting and sharing wood. Congratulations. Congratulations also on the 3520A but it looks so clean. That must have been one stored at the back of a barn somewhere. Looking forward to some posts of new turnings.

    Tom,

I think you're right, I can't turn down an offer of good wood!

The lathe belonged to Nick Huntley, I bought it from his widow. He bought it sometime around 2002ish. I suspect I will put it to more use than he did!
