    Closet Build

This latest project was a built in closet for one of my bedrooms. I took inspiration from a Greene and Greene design from the Gould House. Exterior is douglas fir; inside is lined with red cedar plywood. Drawers have hand cut dovetails and secondary wood is western red cedar. I made every piece except for the top molding - it was milled to match existing when we remodeled.

Very nice, Howard. I really like the look. There's a lot of work there.

Inset doors and drawers are a lot of work but the look is worth it. It makes everything so nice, concise and just a very quality look.

A few more photos. There are lights in the ceiling and also dimmable LEDs above the metal hanging rod.

The hidden upper shelf is a nice touch.

I like the balance of shelf space and drawers.

Nice work. Just curious-what kind of finishing schedule did you use. I have a stash of Doug Fir just waiting for the right project.

Here is what I used that resulted from much optimization. You could substitute gel stain if you prefer; there was no difference to my eye. Commercial prestains also gave good results on tight grained fir.

Prestain:1 part clear shellac from zinsser diluted with 7 parts denatured alcohol. Allow to dry completely app. 1-2 wks
Stain: 1 coat Varathane Am. Walnut oil base stain, 1 coat Red Mahogany., final coat with Am. Walnut
    Finish: zinsser clear shellac

Well designed. Great work on the doors, shelves and finish. Definitely a fine build.
