    Interior board and batten question

In the next weeks or months I plan to frame out one of the interior walls in my shop and put up board and batten style paneling.

I plan to use this mostly as a background to shop and a place to hang my best hand tools. Anywho, I'm planning to hang 4x8 birch plywood as the boards, but I'm unsure of what wood would be best for the battens.

i'm between beech and maple, but open to suggestions, hunting for a good match in a lumber that is fairly easy to work.

Which is the cheapest and easiest to get? I would assume maple but I have no idea where you live. Both are easy to work.
    Wood: a fickle medium....

Did you know SMC is user supported? Please help.

That would be the most reasonable choice, however it sounds like it is difficult to work? I'm wondering if it is worse than rock maple?

In my case, I prefer birch to maple. The maple I get has little black inclusions the size of a match head or so. Some of them plane cleanly, but some of them chip the blades on my jointer/planer. Dunno if the maple you get has the same issue.

Maple here is a little cleaner, but the dark spots do show up occasionally. Sounds like both woods are equally difficult, so I will hunt down some birch for this project.
