pictures are sideways or upside down?

I can't seem to get my pictures right side up when posting.

The other day someone rotated my pictures for me. How do I do this?

    Thanks, Doug

If you're using Windows OS there are "rotate" arrows in the preview and pictures viewer. Once you rotate the picture, close it or advance to the next picture and its rotation will save.

They are right side up until I add them to SMC.

The change is not saved to the image file, only to the local desktop file.

Justin, you need to open the image in a simple editing program (IrfanView is a good free one), rotate it, then save the image.

I use Photoshop and never have problems. I was trying the simplest approach possible for the OP. I forgot they only save to the specific PC like that. Thanks

I'm just not understanding. The picture on my computer now is right side up. It changes once I download it to SMC. Once it is here in my folder I don't see any option to rotate it. I have been promising a little tutorial on checkering and it is picture heavy.

If you are using a smartphone to take the picture, try turning the phone left, horizontal. For some reason that's the way they work.

oh yes. It was a smart phone. My regular camera takes pictures too big for the site and I didn't feel like resizing. I guess I'll wait until I do another checkering job and take the pictures with the phone horizontal. Thanks.

Just google how to rotate pictures using MS Paint. It's a native program and easy to use. Or as Dan said, download and install IrFanView. It's free and works great.

I get what Doug is saying, I've had the same. It's nothing to do with rotating pictures on his computer.

If you take a series of pictures, some of which are with the camera vertical, others horizontal, and rotate them so they all look right on the computer, and then upload them, the forum software rotates some of them again.

    Very annoying.

JPEG has a rotation field in its EXIF data packet... this field is usually filled in by smartphones with accelerometers (most these days). You will need to bring the photo into a program that understands this field and can "reset" it to the value necessary to display correctly. If the forum software is not reading this field (probably not), you can get all kinds of wacky behavior. There are eight orientations listed for this field, so...

Exactly! I have just decided to wait for another project and take new pictures in a manner that will not cause me a bunch of time rotating pictures.
