Out antiquing with my lovely (and oh so tolerant) bride of 32 years earlier in the month and came across these little gems. A type 13 #4 smoother and a more recent 60 1/2 low angle block. They were both hiding under years of accumulated filth. The Japanning is in remarkable condition on both. The iron and steel parts are stained on the #4 but not pitted. The tote was broken on the #4, but the break was so clean I can't even find the glue line from my repair. A little WD40 and a maroon Scotchbrite pad followed by a good soap and water scrubbing made short work of the filth and surface rust. Some steel wool and a quick shot of lacquer on the totes brightened them up too. The 60 1/2 looks nearly new. Both are going to be great users.
Oh, total investment..... $17.00
