Maytag front load washer intake screens,

When the black particles that you sometimes get from well water build up on the intake screens for the hot and cold water lines on that washing machine, do you just clean out the exterior part of the screens, or can you remove them to get better handle on cleaning them out. Tried removing them, but they won't budge.

It is my understanding that they do come out but that are tight and difficult to remove. If you damage them, do you know what a replacement water valve costs? It is my understanding that it is easy to replace (pull the top, remove the screw holding them in place, pull the two wire connection wire sets paying attention to what connects to where......)

The valves on a Kenmore HE4 cost about $30. Installation is a simple job since it is right near the top above the drum.
