The top and bottom both have this profile. You can make the tops enough thicker to add the decorative profile of your choice.

The blue arrow points to the part of the profile I call the tongue. All the side pieces have a groove just below the top edge or just above the bottom edge to receive this tongue during glue up. The result is a top and bottom that float. the show part of the profile (the chamfer in the example pic) partially covers the top or bottom edges of the sides. You need enough overlap on this "show" profile, and enough space leftover in the grooves after the tongue is inserted, to allow for movement.
