    Water based poly over oil??

I had some walnut left over from another project and decided to make a raised feeding tray for my dogs. Knowing this will be getting wet from their water bowl I was thinking I should finish it with several coats of water based poly.
I gave it a coat of 50/50 BLO and mineral spirits. My question is -- after the oil dries, can I coat directly with the poly or should I give it a coat of shellac first? Or is there a better finish I should use for this?

    Thanks for the help!

Unless the oil has cured for a very long time (months), you'll be best served to put a barrier coat of de-waxed shellac on before you apply your water borne poly. Anything with polyurethane resin in it doesn't like to even stick to itself sometimes, so insuring proper adhesion needs to be a consideration.

Water over water. Oil over oil.
    Stupid simple and safe.
Be SURE that I'm not callin' ya stupid. Just be safe and use the correct application for the purpose.
