After a fresh hollow grind, I will follow the bevel for a couple honings. After that, I will start free handing a micro bevel so that I'm removing minimal steel. Once the micro bevel is too long, I'll re grind at the original bevel. I've found with this method that I can get the most honings before having to re grind. This is only with plane blades however as they tend to get fairly beat up. My chisels and other tools tend to stay in better shape so I can just follow the bevel ever time.
