    Mechanical Packing?

Got some interesting stuff today, among the items a box of "Mechanical Packing"? I will be posting some pics Saturday morning, just thought somebody might know what mechanical packing is used for. I bought it for the box, with the metal reinforced edges maybe '60s.

I believe your talking about material used in packing glands in fluid transfer components. Like the material in the packing behind a "packing but" on a faucet or hose bib. Comes in all varieties for industrial applications.

If it is the packing that Mark describes hold onto it. I had to repack 2 hose bibs this summer and the kids at Lowes or HD didn't have a clue to what I was talking about. They wanted to sell me new bibs! I found packing at a local Mom & Pop hardware store that was still in business...
