    Arts and Crafts Sofa Table

    Hello all,

Here's an A&C sofa table I built with a good friend, in part as a wedding present for him and his lovely new wife. The design is from the March/April 2003 FWW, but with a modified lower stretcher/shelf. The 1/4 sawn white oak is from the Columbia River Gorge and the secondary wood is hackberry that I milled from a local tree with a friend. LV pulls. Mix of hand and machine work.

The finish is BLO, shellac and wax after fuming. The finish process is described here:

Thanks to folks who provided feedback on the lower stretcher modification (I have a sketch up file if anyone would like it).

I conspired with my friend's wife to sneak it into the house while he was out, had a beer with him and then returned to enjoy his surprise. My new favorite delivery method

    Cheers,
    Chris C.

Very nice and it adds a lot to use local material and to make it a team effort. It'll make for a great story as the years go by.

Fantastic. Love the top, the boards were well chosen. and the Dovetails are excellent !! Anyone who admires machine cut DT's should take a look at these and see how REAL DOVE TAILS are made and spaced !! 100/100 for this project !

Thanks for the fine comments gentlemen, I was right pleased with the outcome, especially since it's my first piece of traditional hardwood furniture (though built skills through smaller pieces. And a workbench...).

    Beautiful Job!

I like the dovetails too...nice idea omitting the half pin on the bottom. I've never seen that before.

Being a fan of A&C this one is right up my alley...
Sweet piece. And a real nice job on the dovetails.

I really like that. It looks great and job well done.
What type of joinery did you use for the bottom shelf?

Many thanks for the compliments. The dovetails were not my best, but came out o.k. in the end. I'm not that accomplished and only a little practiced. In other words, if you haven't, give them a go.

The drawer detail is borrowed from Mr. Schwarz:

    http://blog.lostartpress.com/2012/04...de-my-drawers/

And the lower shelf is straight M&T of the shelf into the rails and M&T of the rails into the leg. Did take some mock ups with cardboard and clamps to decide on the right width and height.

Another detail that I think helps the piece is the grain orientation on the drawers running "downhill". If the sides were flipped, the visual effect would be unsetting, as the eye would expect the contents to roll out of the drawers.

    Cheers,
    C
