Looks a lot like the stuff people collect around gettysburg (or the serious collectors do), pieces of broken tree with stuff stuck in it, etc (bullets, artillery shells or shell fragments).

That looks like a horseshoe in the wye of a tree. I wonder how it got in there. It was obviously worth $30 at least to them to ship it!!
