We need a kitchen nook table and it will be right adjacent the bar-height section of counter across from the sink, so I thought we would do the table at that same 42" height, with 30" chairs.
Saw an idea in an Amish furniture store. See pic. The leg array is essentially a pedestal, with the legs inside enough to not foul your legs or knees when seated or getting on and off the seat. We tried it out in the showroom to verify.
Legs are 2-1/4" thick.
Will build it in soft maple or whatever I can get that is available in the 12/4 material needed for the legs.
