    Question Just arrived today

    Silver with a black handle.

Has a spot to store a few bits in the handle

    Name?

    Goodell-Pratt Co. #188A

Ever hear tell of such a thing?

Has a few numbers stamped around the top, counting from 1 to 8

Made in Greenfield MA. no less. Seems to work like new, too.

    Useful?

It's a push drill, similar to my MF 185a (all silver). if you turn the top around to each numbered slot, a bit should fall out. if you cup your hand under the end while doing this, it will fall into your hand, not onto the floor And yes, they're useful for drilling small holes, or starting holes for nails

Maybe a photo or two will helpIMAG0206.jpg

And a close up of the handle's latch

Things were a might stiff, gave it a bit of oil in the moving parts. It is missing two bits, no biggie. Drills a hole nice and fast. Not too bad for $15?

I think there are three or four of those in Stanley and Yankee equivalents rolling around in a drawer somewhere in one of my tool boxes.

I used them all the time as a phone installer. That was over 40 years ago.

The Stanley's had a weak point at the nut that held the bit chamber casing in position. Some of the guys would push it up by the nut and tighten it. Over time that would strip the threads and the chamber wouldn't stay closed.

Yours has a different way of getting to the bits.

Yep, has a "dial-a-bit" feature. Need to figure out the sizes I have, to find out what two I am missing. Sizes are as a single number, like a size "5". What size is this in inches? maybe I can "mic" them to find out which goes where?

BTW: Have two Stanley Handyman Yankee drivers in the drawer. One with the black and red scheme the other with the red and gray. Just have the slotted tip for either. Be nice to find a Phillips tip sometime...

    Alrighty, took this thing to work, got the tips/drill bits out, and took a Mic to them;

    1st: .0925
    2nd: .1040
    3rd: .1200
    4th: .1400
    5th: .1560

Had eight slots for bits, have five bits. Slots are number 1-8, wondering which of these is which. And, where does one pick up the rest of the bits at?

I have a chrome one like the phone men had. I have all of the bits.
There are no problems with anything on it.

I found bits on line, maybe ebay.

My MF 185a has the actual diameters listed on the barrel, and the diameters are the same as those that Joe posted. search ebay for "drill points", and you'll find a number of listings
