Thread: Finish for a Chest-on-chest Lower-chest Top?

    Finish for a Chest-on-chest Lower-chest Top?

I'm trying to decide on a clear finish to brush or wipe on the top of the lower case of a chest-on-chest I'm building. I'd like it to be possible to use the two cases separately as low chests.

The thought of separating the cases raises the question of a suitable finish for the top of the lower case. It needs to be hard enough to support the upper case (which is pretty heavy) without sticking or developing an impression. It would be nice if it would harden in a few weeks or less.

I think the top will be mahogany veneer on plywood with solid edges. I don't plan to fill the pores.

Behlen Rockhard Urethane? Arm-R-Seal? Shellac? Some kind of lacquer? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

I'd go with shellac. Hard, fast drying, and quick to dry.
