    Case for socket set

Does anybody have a photo or suggestions, ideas, etc. for building a box (case) to replace the plastic box that my 1/2" socket set came in. Did you fiddle with the different depth sockets? Did you basically replace the plastic case or come up with something different? I am just looking for a functional box that will keep this set together.

    Thanks

Well... It's a socket set. Find a cardboard box that will hold all the parts, and call it good. Or if you want something sturdier, make a wood box that holds all the parts, and call it good. No internal partitions, no fussy little things to impale the individual sockets on. No finish, no flocking. Just a box. It's a socket set.

If you want to build something, seems like it is just cutting the right sized holes. Personally, I put the sockets on something like this:

...throw them in a drawer with the wrenches, and call it a day.

Don't know cost, but these look nice.

Edit: Here is the one I originally was looking for

Of course you would still need a box, which could be wood!

Bill, while you could just throw the sockets into a drawer as has been suggested, a box to organize them would be a nice project to build in your shop. This is a woodworking forum and I'm surprised that others are trying to talk you out of doing woodworking. I would suggest you go for it. Maybe you could build a nice little box out of pine or or oak with box joints and the top and bottom set in grooves plowed in the sides. Then make an insert to hold the sockets, wrench and extensions to suit. Just drill holes for the sockets. No need to get too fancy with different depths. Or you could make a smaller tapered box to fit inside. It could be a great hand tool project if you are inclined that way. Maybe the top would be beveled toward the edges. Finished with shellac and some brass hardware, I think you'd have a nice organizer for the tools.

Lay the pieces out on a sheet of paper and draw a full size pattern for the layout. If you want a hand with fleshing it out, drop me a PM.

I know it's not technically a box, but I was about to order the new Free Zone storage board for my sockets.

The only think I'm wrestling with is how to store my pass through sockets.
