    That shhhnick sound?

I am a newbie to woodworking and handtools. My #7 makes this sweet sound after I sharpen the blade. The jointer is a round top bedrock 607 and I bought it from tablesawtom. Anyways, I also have a #4 bronze lienielsen and a type 14 #5 with a heavily cambered blade.

My question is this: Given that I sharpen all the blades on the same setup, why does my jointer make this sound and my other planes do not? I can't get enough of that sweet sound. Is it possible that my jointer plane is sharper than the others?

The sound of wood slicing is something many woodworkers crave.

The #7 has a larger area for the sound to resonate making it easier to hear. It can also be a combination of the shaving thickness and the wood used.

A thicker shaving will sound somewhat like a zipper.

Now that I think about it, when I edge plane a board to final width with a heavily set jack it does make that sound a little. It just doesnt seem to crack like a whip like my jointer does!

A heavily chambered blade will not make this sound as readily as a wide flat blade on a jointer.

Sound is vibration. So, the ideal plane is quiet.

I experience the same thing with my heavier jointer. I cannot explain it but I agree it feels and sounds great. I don't get that with my lighter planes.

True, but the shaving isn't standing still for it!

I have a 4 1/2 with a stock blade and chipbreaker that makes that sound but the other 2 with Hock blades don't. Maybe the blade thickness has something to do with it
The significant problems we encounter cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.

The penalty for inaccuracy is more work
