    Raffanesqe Box

One of our club members had to quit turning for health reasons and sold out his shop. At the last meeting couple of meetings we have sold some of his wood to club members. I picked up a little piece of seagrape (Coccoloba uvifera) wood that was calling my name. The red color is natural to the species, and the wood is hard and brittle and chips easily, thus requiring sharp tools.

Finish is simply one coat of walnut oil at this time. Three inches in diameter and about 2 1/2" tall. Picture Jaspar inset into the 'knob' on the lid. C&C welcome of course.

Beautiful luxury item, something that can be used and touched daily, good for powder or paper clips.

That is a beauty and the wood looks wonderful. Never heard of seagrape.

That's beautiful wood and a great box, Thom. Love the curve and the beads. I haven't looked at my Raffan book in a long time, but there's a lot of inspiration in there. I see what you mean about the brittle wood, but well worth dealing with it, given the beautiful result.

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate the kind words.

I called it 'Raffanesque' because of the detail inside the inner lid and the beads. I've seen those type of details on several of his pieces and his videos. Also because I used a scraper for most of the inside shaping.

Great form and execution. Are you going to fill it with miniatures?

What, and hide them? SWMBO has claimed it.

Very nice Thom. I just got a 4" square of myrtle that has a similar fate awaiting it. I have no experience with myrtle, so it will be something new for me.

Very nice Thom! I see why your SWMBO (I had to Google that ) claimed it.
