    Source for used Electric motors?

I recently scored (what I thought was a deal at the time..) a jointer that needs a NEMA 56 motor with 1.75HP.

Ive looked on ebay and see many "off brands" for around $200. My personal preference is to buy American made if possible

Does anyone know of a place that sells used leeson or baldor motors?
While on the topic. The jointer came with 1.75hp. Is there a reason I shouldn't upgrade it to 2 or 3hp?

    Thanks
    ~Jonathan

Only used motors I have found for sale was at my local hvac company. They salvage equipment when they install replacements.

I see used motors in that horsepower range all the time on Craigslist and my area typically isn't a very good area to buy used tools in. I see you list home as Atlanta. I would think the choices would be even better on that Craigslist.

I know you don't want Chinese equipment but I will say I bought a 3/4 hp motor from Harbor Freight several years ago to power a home made drum sander and I have used it very often and very hard since then without any problems. It was less than half the price of a name brand and about the same as old (really old) used motors that would be suitable. It was also cheaper than equivalent off brand selections from places like Northern Tool.

Have you thought about getting the old motor rebuilt?

I didn't get an original motor or I would have considered it!

I have looked at craigslist. I haven't seen many motors that are not 3ph. I am considering it but trying to avoid the complexity if possible.

The suggestions and comments are appreciated! Keep them coming!

I would not be as concerned as to origin for a small 2 hp or under motor. Some new Leeson of that size will be Chinese, and Techtop make a decent Chinese motor. When you get to 5 hp and over, Baldor is the pick of the litter but they make several ranges of quality too. Usually it isn't economical to rebuild small motors. Dave

When my 5hp "explosion proof motor" on my compressor was experiencing start up issues, I had my motor guy "check it out" ($80) and he informed me it had a bad winding - rebuild was around $1000. Discussing a replacement, I mentioned I could get the original replacement Baldor from Ebay for just $360. He asked if I could buy him a few as well. Install was a direct swap and it's been running for a year with no issues.

No, there's no reason that you can't replace the motor with a more common HP rating, like 1-1/2 or 2 HP. Without knowing the size and make of your jointer, I can't offer a direct recommendation. Usually, though, 6" jointers have a motor of around 1 HP, and 8" have a motor from 1-1/2 HP on up.My Rockwell 8" jointer, model 37-315, has a 2HP motor, replacing the original 1-1/2 HP. You should be able to find a used motor in a big city such as the one you live in. If you can't, the Surplus Center-http://www.surpluscenter.com/ has good deals on new ones. Rick

Check your local electrical rewinding/repair shops for a source, or a shop just might have one on-hand.

If you find you need to go with a new motor, check Grainger -- http://www.grainger.com/category/motors/ecatalog/N-bii

ENCO also has new motors: http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRHI?PMSECT=2005109

    You'll have a much easier time finding a 56C 1.5 or 2hp replacement motor than 1.75. A USA-made 2hp 1725rpm TEFC 56C Leeson should cost around $300 from these guys: http://www.electricmotorsite.com/c/l...Farm+Duty.html
