    CNC Lathe Project

    Guys...
Here is a quick video of the first programmed cuts
on my latest home project. It's a CNC add-on for a wood turning lathe. I think
the video will give a fairly good idea of its capabilities.

    I
have some work to do with chip guards and macros etc., but I just had to cut
something to see if it worked!

    File shown was designed and
toolpathed using VCPro 8. RPM as on screen, feed 30ipm, .125 (radius .25
diameter) cut per pass with the 10mm tool and .030 with the detail tool. Enjoy!

Very cool...When I was working in a machine shop they had an attachment for a metal lathe to duplicate parts. It was hydraulic & a pointer followed a pattern that had to be made. That was 40 yrs so now they must have cnc metal lathes.....Great job

Very interesting video. I have a question, since I know nothing about CNC: Do you program each pass to only go in a certain depth or does the CNC program itself determine that depth? Also, have you done any test to see the maximum pass speed or is this the limit?

No, it's not thin enough yet.

That's so cool, I want one! Curious what kind of wood you used. I would think that some brittle woods might cause a problem, but that is really cool.

I had the X beam milled at work, I did the rest at home on my little Cobra.

    Scott...
Those cuts are parallel lines to the final profile that are toolpathed on the vector side. I will be doing some testing in the future, but this was the first "programmed" cuts the machine made. I made a few manuall passes with keyboard control to get a feel for the feeds and speeds.

A few minor additions to the dust deflection. Cuts are from a 3 1/4" square Phil. Mahagony blank. Last look before its off to it's new Owner

Great job Gary. Whole machine sold or just lathe add on?
Glad its my shop I am responsible for - I only have to make me happy.

    Mike...
Thanks for the kind words, this has been a fun project. I sold the machine complete, assembled, calibrated and tuned. Includes the lathe, CNC additions, computer and monitor. Training also included. Saves many hours of frustration for the new owner.

I am looking at a smaller version as a possible kit. After this unit ships I am ordering a Jet 1221vs to build it on. Kit will run on Mach, ShopBot, WinCNC or LinuxCNC

I don't know how I missed this when it was first posted, but that is neater than heck!

Is that inset tooling? How many legs could you cut before changing the tooling?

    Phil...
Thanks. Yes, I am using solid carbide insert tooling from one of the online suppliers. Roughing is done with 10mm round. Finish pass uses 35* pointed finisher. Sorry, but I doubt I will ever cut with it enough to gauge tool life. I will ask the new owner though.

Nice work Gary! That was pretty cool.
If I had one of those, I'd have tackled that 400 spindle job a week ago....
