    Knob size for a Stanley 4 1/2

    Hi all,

I have a Stanley type 12 4 1/2 plane that needs a new knob. From the base of the casting to the top of the brass nut is 2 9/16". So I know that this is the tall knobe style.
Does anyone have the other dimensions for this knob?

This plane doesn't have a knob and the tote is 'slighly' burned. I plan on making a new knob and tote from some apple sitting around the workshop.
A free plane is a free plane. I think it will clean up nicely as a user plane20150317_140939.jpg
    Thanks,
    Phil

I think the type 12 is a "low knob" era plane; so it would be the large version of the low knob, which, unfortunately I don't have around. Some will here, I'm sure. It takes more than measurements to get it right. You need a profile + measurements.

The plane shown is type 14 or later, and tall knobs started with type 12. Definitely a tall knob plane.

Agree that's a Type 14...the raised ring, although this one appears to be machined also. I have never seen the plane size bracketing the knob. The arrangement of Bailey, plane size and Made in U.S.A. on the toe does not fit the typing, but Stanley didn't always do things by the as yet unwritten book. What dates appear behind the frog? It would be U.S. Pat. and Apr-19-10 for a type 14. Nice plane and it will make a good worker with some new wood.

I have never measured the original knobs before. I turn the top part of the knob to fit my hand and the bottom to fit into the raised ring. I prefer the lower, broader profile of the older knobs.

Here are the measurements from a sample of one tall knob:

    Large diameter 1.64"
    Waist diameter 0.87"
Lower diameter 1.20" tapering to ~1.13"
    Overall height 2.70"

    Thanks everyone for your replies.
I discovered that the tall knob on my stanley #6 fit perfectly. The dimensions were:

    BOTTOM
    DISTANCE : DIAMETER
    0" : 1 1/8"
    3/16" : 1 3/16"
    5/16" : 1 5/32"
    3/4" : 7/8"
    15/16" : 21/32"

As you can see in the photos below I made a new tote and knob from apple, soaked them in warm BLO and then coated them with amber shalac. The plane works quite well with the original blade and chip breaker but I will probably file the mouth open a bit so I can put in a thicker aftermarket blade/chipbreaker.

    Thanks again,
    Phil
