Using a project I saw on YouTube, I am making a cutting board of diamonds of 3 different woods, 1 3/4" on a side, cut at 30-deg and glued into hexagons These are then glued together into a large flat array that looks like a 3D bunch of blocks [called "tumbling blocks]; it is a real chore [read "impossible"] to glue the entire piece together without any gaps [mostly small, but some quite large].
DON'T USE THIS PROJECT AS A MODEL. THERE ARE BETTER DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PROCESS OPTIONS, AND IF I NEED TO MAKE ANOTHER CUTTING BOARD, IT WILL NOT BE THIS ONE.
After filling the large gaps with carefully fit and glued pieces, I decided to use a pasty mixture of GoodFilla wood filler, microballoons [Gougeon Bros or System 3 -boat building supplies] and Titebond III to fill the smaller gaps.
I am considering the use of CA glue on the smaller gaps to stabilize it and to make it waterproof. I plan on several coats of Howard butcher block oil or cutting board oil to finish this before sending it to its new home.
Any suggestions?? ... ... warnings?? ... ... RED FLAGS??
