Any ideas on wood type?

I pick this up a couple years ago from the "project board" bin at the local Rockler.
It wasn't marked, and I'm not that experienced for grain recognition.
I can say that the board always seemed overly heavy for it's size.
I was thinking initially when I made a couple of these boxes, that it might be Ash.
The tops, bottoms and keys in these boxes are Walnut.
Some of the sides are cut side grain, and some are face.

If it seems extra heavy for it's size, given that grain, it could be hickory or pecan, which are closely related, or locust.

Looks like black walnut that was sawn out of a log with tension wood (off-center pith with wider rings on one side of the pith versus the other).

+1. Looks very similar to the darker hickory woods I've worked with. Plus, being heavy, it's likely hickory or pecan.

Thanks much for all the feedback. I got some Hickory from a friend a couple years ago and turned a couple bowls from it. This wood does have a similar smell - not very pleasant to my nose, unlike the smell of Black Walnut, which is a favorite of mine. This was originally an 8/4 board and every time I picked it up I thought about how overly heavy it seemed given its size. I ask because I like to notate the wood type when I sign a piece. Looks like Pecan is a type of Hickory so just going with "Hickory" ought to cover both. Thanks again.

After a second review, I agree with hickory. Pecan is a hickory, and hickory is in the walnut family.

Wood on jointer looks like it was supposed to be a turning blank. I am thinking something more exotic and the grain pattern looks more ring growth an not like pecan or hickory. The density may give a better clue.
