Several years ago, I researched the best thing to use to stain/preserve our deck.

After calling several deck mfg/installers here in Atl, I was told that the thing that actually protects the wood is the 'solids' in the paint/stain/protectant.

In particular, a place called MFG here in Atl had the stuff. Was really thick and kinda pricey. We covered deck over before too long.

I asked a paint rep a while back (Sherwin Williams (SW), i think) what is the difference in the really good stuff and the BORG brand (or BORG style made by whomever)--he said that in paint, you're paying for the metal in the paint.

So, I got me some SW oil based (that's all I use now) and built something for bathroom. After it cured, I had to carve out some so the little organizer would fit despite the euro hinges. I carved out the wood to the extent that all was left in the hinge area, about 1/2 by 2" was just paint....but it was solid, like filler. I didn't stress it, mind you.

Any thoughts?
