Gluing to pieces that are pre-stained

Is it possible to glue together pieces that have been stained with a water based stain?

In a word, yes. Now . . . glue them for what purpose is where the interesting discussion starts. If there is no topcoat you are somewhat better off but, PVA would not be my glue of choice as it benefits from using water as a vehicle and counts on being transported deep (relatively) into the fibers of the wood. Anything interfering with that, including a poor fit, weakens the bond. What is the joint / mating items and what is the purpose?

Yes, wood glue is not bothered by stain. But you have to really mean stain only. The finish aisle is filled with things called stain/finish, or the like. Those do have varnish in them, and you can't really glue to them.

When I started woodworking, I didn't know squat. I have progressed in 30 years - now I do know squat.
