    Deep Rotary Engraving

I wanted to get your opinions..

I am working on a project to do some DEEP engraving on 2.5" wood dowels.. I'm not interested in contrast or anything like that, just a very deep engraved surface.. I was thinking soft maple or pine would be best. What wood do you think would be best.

My first priority is speed.. These are for a production run so the faster the better.. Of course material costs are important as well.

    Thanks

I would use basswood or poplar if you can find them.

Bass is pretty easy to engrave, though I would not be able to speak to cost or source.
