I want to stick vinyl tile on a shelf I'm building, and I have to cut a tile to 17.75" by 11". I do not have special tools for this. Question: will I regret using the band saw?

Cry "Havoc," and let slip the dogs of bench.
I was socially distant before it was cool.
A little authority corrupts a lot.
We cut tile by scoring it with a utility knife and then heat it and snap it
What Jerome said, hit it a couple of times with the knife while scoring (straight edge is helpful too) and the tile should snap even without the heat.
Scoring worked perfectly. Thanks.

An aluminum straight edge or 24" stainless steel shop ruler ought to help you score a very neat cut using a box cutter with a new blade. Doesn't sound like you're building a Rolex. Or you could do it the way we used to do when I was in government service: Measure it with a slide caliper, mark it with a Sharpie, and cut it with a chainsaw.
