    Dying maple... Again

I'm sorry to ask this question again, but I'm building a blanket chest for my sister in law, and am building it with soft maple. She really likes dark stuff, mainly black. I am hoping to dye it an ebony color, but not quite that dark. I tried some transient dye in DNA, and then coated it with lacquer, which is my intended finish. It came out a good color that I think she will really like, I'd just like the grain to pop a little more. Any ideas? I also tried a coat of shellac first, but it came out really strange. Thanks,
    Steve

I not an expert but it seems to me that the darker it is the less the grain will pop.
