Thread: Shave with your laser

  1. #31
I see a foam cutter in action, it looks like a hot wire melting the hair, no smoke just smell of burning hair...
When it is OK to sell "laser sharp" shaving blades, I guess this foam cutter can be called a laser blade

Man, how is that project even still alive? I would have thought the KS crew would have booted it almost before it began! What a load of nonsense...

Don't be to hasty Dave, if you carefully watch the video you can see someone using an actual soldering iron to carry out some kind of soldering! A company with such resources surely should be taken very seriously indeed. I think the investors 3m is in very safe hands

Well. Glowforge was featured in the business section of the Seattle Times today (10-5) they gave him about 1/3 of the page plus another half page deper in the section.

    Interesting.

......this is an add on. Appears Glowforge is based here in Seattle (SoDo area if you are near enough to visit). That explains the large article they got in our paper. The article really leans hard on the 3d aspect of their name. And the large photo of the Ceo shows him holding a rather large contoured globemade of cut corrugated cardboard which implies to me that they made it on the machine rather than assembling a gazillion flat pieces that were each made on the machine. And the article spends a lot of time looking at its competetitors.... The actual 3d printers out there. Seems rather misleading to me but everyone in the media seems to be buying the comparison. This is going to be interesting to watch.

Hi Dave: I can understand that some can't wrap their head around a name, but the intention is there to convey to someone that you can make dimensional pieces. Most of the small desktop 3D printers have a small build platform and take forever to print, but a great feature is that you can print parts which can be assembled into larger things. Some folks seem to short circuit over verbage, but it does not change what it is capable of producing such as the giant earth lamp in the pic, IMHO.

Here's more info for those interested.

    Demo at World Maker Faire:

"This is what we did for 150 people at Maker Faire. Apologies again for the 2 hour wait times."

Economical 3D laser printer by @glowforge ($1995). This #tech will be brought to a much wider audience #GWSummit

    Hey Matt!

Dont get me wrong. Indo think they have some neat ideas in this product. And if it performs close to their advertising i can see folks who might not consider something like this buying it. But i also see issues in safety from what little i know of this thing. And i also have some problems with the 3D claims. Slapping 3d on the name implies some things to me that is not actually what the product does. An exacto blade in the hands of a Kirigami artist is a 3d tool as well under this definition. That is me however. I really am intrigued by this and where it goes and how folks end up using it versus the initial ideas based on the marketing.

I am actuallyintrigued enough to consider popping down to SoDo sometime to check them out. I have no intention of buying. Just curious and they are quite close to me. Maybe 8 miles by bicycle? If i do go i will report back!

Nah, I didn't take anything the wrong way. You seem to be a curious guy and hope you get a chance to make that trip.

Kickstarter requires a working protoype, which they were not able to demonstrate. They rebooted on Indiegogo, if Scott is still looking for something to shave his legs with.

Excellent! What I mean by that - I'm glad to see them holding a popular campaign to the rules. Requiring a working prototype is what sets Kickstarter apart.

Their advertising is exactly as honest as mine would be if I tried to sell my CNC router by calling it a 3-D keepsake box printer.
