Pedal Addition For Mini Drill Press?

I have a mini drill press that needs a variable speed foot pedal on it. It has a variable speed dial on it already, but it really doesn't slow it down very much and I need to be able to ramp the speed up from very slow. Do pedals vary in how well they deliver power? Will a cheap one work as well as an expensive one?

I have one of those without the speed dial. You may need to bypass the current speed control if you use a speed pedal. If the motor slows down very much it may not have enough power to do anything.
