The Michigan Association of Woodturners makes tops to donate to the Detroit Children’s Hospital. This year they exceeded their goal and made 5673! While not as elaborate as those by JKJ’s here are a few that I turned. I used a piece of ebony to friction burn on the lines.

Zounds, that's a lot of tops! That would take me a year (I'm very slow). Excellent idea. I've given them a few at a time to doctors and social workers who often need to distract kids and keep their minds off the problems.
The kids don't care the least about elaborate!
